I had found out I was pregnant and told my boyfriend, so what now? I had no idea what people did in these situations or when it was time to go to the doctor. I decided to go to the doctor to see how far along I was and to double check that I was even pregnant since I had heard of people getting false positives. My boyfriend (Quinn) and I went to the walk-in clinic together so that we could be 100% sure.
As I walked up to the desk with my health card I started to shake I was so nervous because I knew they always asked why you are there, I was just nervous to say it out loud. I was at the front and it was my turn next, I walked up and as I expected the lady at the desk asked what I was there for and I quietly said “to check if I’m pregnant” because I didn’t want the people in line behind me to here. She gave me an odd look, said “alright”, took my health card and I sat down in the waiting room next to Quinn waiting for my name to be called. “Tayler” my heart started to beat fast as I stood up and followed the lady into the room which isn’t really a room the only thing private about it was a thin curtain separating you from the person next to you.
I thought they were going to check my blood for the pregnancy hormone but all I had to do was pee in a cup and they did a pregnancy test with something that looked like a thin piece of paper. I sat there waiting for the doctor to come back and give me the results, even though I knew I was pregnant and doubted I had a false positive my heart was still beating fast and my palms were sweating.
The doctor came in and looked at me with a serious look on her face and said: “so, unfortunately, you are pregnant, you have options so take your time no rush.” I just sat there and nodded at her. Thinking back to it now it was off-putting that she had said unfortunately, this lady didn’t know my life, she didn’t know if this was something that was planned or an accident or if it was something I wanted or not. She just assumed it was an unfortunate event because I am 17.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I did want to see how far along I was so the doctor gave me a piece of paper (referral) which I took to the ultrasound room next door and booked my first ultrasound for July 20th, 2017.
After I was done I went into the waiting room and walked out to the car with Quinn and confirmed that I was pregnant. We had a quiet ride home while both of our minds raced.
